Got a new domain

I was on the way to Castro St. in Mountain View for dinner after work with Tommy and Damon (both interns last summer who are now full-timers) when the fact that I am getting my Ph.D. came up. The comment was made that I was going to be Dr. Brett and I joked I should have the domain name. Both of them immediately said that was a cool idea and I should definitely do it.

So I did. =) In another instance of me using my Canadian citizenship and in honour of my degree coming from Canada, I have registered drbrett.ca. It will take about 48 hours to go live. Guess I really need to make sure I get that Ph.D. now. =)

It was kind of interesting getting a .ca ccTLD (country code Top Level Domain). When you register you are required to agree to a bunch of terms saying what you will and will not show on the web site along with stating that you meet the requirements in terms of being a Canadian. You can also become a member of CIRA, which is the organization that manages the .ca DNS servers and vote on the board and attend meetings (I declined since I will never bother with either ability afforded me through membership).

Anyway, I now have two domains (other one is drifty.org). Probably going to use drbrett.ca as my primary address since it is more relevant for my current life than drifty.org is (actually not that many people still in my life who use that nickname for me). But currently both point to the same location. Now I just need to choose a web host and get off my ass and design that new web site I have floating in my head. That will probably become my primary free-time project once I get back up to Canada.
