This article does a thorough job of looking at how much hunting for the best gas price really buys you compared to other items. Basically says what I always thought: it ain't worth it. Even at $0.05 price difference, if you think about the typical car having 16 gallons, that only saves you $0.80 per fill-up. Even if you filled up once a week, that only buys you $3.20 a month. But think about your groceries and bothering to go somewhere that has better deals. You can make that up instantly.
Or even crazier, compare premium to regular. That's usually a $0.20 difference per gallon. That works out to $3.20 per fill, or $12.80 a month. While that isn't small, it also is not far from the cost of a movie ticket. I don't think I will give anyone a hard time for using the good stuff on their sports car anymore.
