Syncing a Nokia E70 with iSync on OS X

While doing my occasional check for a new firmware update for my cell phone, I discovered that Nokia has released an iSync plug-in for my US-based E70! Took a little bit of trickery, though, so I figured I would blog about it so other people can take my approach.

1. Go here and download the plug-in.
2. Install the plug-in just like the instructions say.
3. Run iSync (dealing with the error message, if there is one, comes next).
4. If iSync claims that the plug-in is for another version of iSync, but you are running the most up-to-date version, click the little arrow to have the Finder show the plug-in.
5. Drag the plug-in folder for the phone to the Desktop.
6. Right-click on iSync in your Applications folder and choose "Show Package Contents".
7. Navigate to Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/PlugIns .
8. Drop the plug-in folder in to that location.
9. Launch iSync and add your phone (delete the old phone info and undue any hack you did like the one outlined here).

That's it! You should now be able to sync with the proper support to your E70. I suspect these steps would work with any other phone that has a plug-in offered by Nokia.

iPhone guided tour

Apple recently released a guided tour of the iPhone. Very slick! I showed Meesh the Google Maps support and she got very excited over it.

Personally I would not buy an iPhone right now. I would not want to be an AT&T customer again. Plus the chances of actually getting one any time near the launch is slim.

MIght switch to Helio when I move back to the States

I went into a magazine shop yesterday and one of the magazines I flipped through discussed the design behind the Helio Ocean. Seemed like a neat phone so I decided to look at the site. Seems like a good device.

And then I remembered that Helio was a company geared towards people who want a lot out of their cell phones. This is shown (to me) by the fact that they have Google Maps with GPS support so that it shows you exactly where you are.

So I decided to have a peek at their pricing. Holy crap is it better then anybody else I have looked at! They have an All-In plan that included free mobile-to-mobile, nights, and weekend along with 500 daytime for $65/month. The kicker is that it has unlimited messaging (of any kind), web browsing, downloads, and use of the GPS!

For a quick price comparison, T-Mobile charges $50 to add unlimited Internet access to any other plan. That is an additional cost to the $40 to get 600 minutes. And of course either plans trounces what I could get in Canada.

Might have to seriously think about moving over to Helio when I move back to the States. Hopefully I can take my pre-paid cell phone number with me. I will also have to lose my current phone since it is a GSM phone and Helio uses TDMA over Sprint or Verizon. But since I am not due back in the States for a couple of years that shouldn't be a problem.
