Now I don't think I need a full-size upright. I am going to live in an apartment with indoor access so I won't have stuff constantly blowing in my front door or being dragged in by my shoes. Plus I am just not a messy person. So I think a simple sweeper and a good handheld will work.
For the handheld I am planning to go with a Dyson DC16. I know the battery life is not very long (six minutes), but I only want it for when I suddenly make a crumbling mess somewhere to vacuum out the furniture (like my Herman Miller chair which has little holes to hide crumbs in).
For the sweeper I am not sure what I am going to do. I could go extremely simple and get a Swiffer CarpetFlick, but that might be too low-tech. I could take it up a notch and try to find a decent electric sweeper somewhere (apparently not Home Depot near me and I don't love my options at Canadian Tire). But if I have the handheld Dyson I should be able to use something like the Swiffer on a monthly basis and the Dyson for spot cleanup.
And I do plan to clean monthly. I already have a recurring calendar event to clean my apartment as if it was going to be photographed once a month. That way it never gets too far out of disarray. And using the "to be photographed" angle will hopefully help me make sure the place also looks decent instead of a student's run-down apartment.
And as for spills and stains, I figure some elbow grease and targeted spraying of some chemical will work. I think all of this together will be good enough to work for me without having to buy a full-sized vacuum that I would have to consider dragging around after I graduate.

I've gone down the road you are thinking of going. In my experience, picking up a $50 upright uses less space, keeps an apartment cleaner, and is far less hassle.
@josiah:
And I went down that road. Bought a 12 amp upright and the Dyson handheld.
