I scratched my PS3 itch

Decided to go for it. Took forever, though, has the purchase was flagged by my credit card company and it had to be cleared both by Visa and my bank. Picked up Resistance, God of War, and Casino Royale on Blu-Ray.

Read the manual last night. Set the box up last night and patched the firmware. I ran the Folding@Home client for almost two hours (that thing is fast!). Now I am downloading a bunch of demos from the Playstation Store.

And to the comments about buying a PS2 cheap in my last post: the purchase was not about playing PS2 games as that was just considered a perk. It was to get a current generation system that has online play that was not an XBox 360. PS3 fit that better than the Wii does at the moment.

It's too bad that in your PS3 "cons" list, you missed a big one: No good games coming anytime soon. You'll definitely want to take advantage of the PS2 backwards compatability.

Really, the gaming community as a whole has no excitement about the future PS3 catalog, it's a bunch of crap no one cares about. Somewhere far into the future MGS and FF will come out, but not until 2008 at the earliest.

Wii has some fantastic games coming up. As does the 360.

Here's hoping, for your sake, the catalog improves, but right now, most of the gaming community is seeing the PS3 as a "low" cost Blu-Ray player, and that's about it.

Jay: I honestly am fine with using the PS2 catalogue of games to keep me happy until more PS3 games come out (since I have never owned a PS2 there is a lot to play). Plus I don't think the upcoming games are that thin considering I am not a high schooler and thus don't have 8 hours a day to play. I am personally looking forward to the following gamess in 2007 according to ps3.ign.com:

* Calling All Cars
* F.E.A.R.
* Rainbox Six: Vegas
* Lair
* Ninja Gaiden Sigma
* Half-Life 2
* Unreal Tournament 3
* Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
* Devil May Cry 4
* Metal Gear Solid 4
* Heavenly Sword

And this is ignoring all of the PS2 games I want to play. While not everyone is leaping at the system because of the cost and currently announced lineup, I am happy with what is in the pipeline for the year and in the future as I just can't game enough to get through what is coming out.

In my past I have owned the NES, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast. Those last two did not have huge catalogues, but they had enough nugget of gold to keep me happy. I suspect that will happen here as well.

Well, as long as you're happy with what's coming up, that is all that matters :)

To be fair though, six of the games in that list are coming to the 360, or are already on it.

I hate MS as a company as much as you do, but it's hard to look past the solid job they've done with the 360. Developers are flocking to it, and they're getting some great games.

I'm a Wii guy myself, but if I weren't doing a PhD (ie. had more money *and* time), I'd pick up a 360 as a second console.

Oh, and MGS won't make 2007, despite what IGN says. Listen to the IGN podcasts, and everyone there (including the ps3.ign.com editor) firmly believes it won't be out until 2008. The official date is '07, which is why it's up on the list, but industry buzz is saying otherwise.

On the Wii front, this year I'm looking forward to:

* Super Paper Mario
* Super Smash Bros. Brawl (online)
* Battalion Wars 2 (online)
* Super Mario Galaxy
* Project H.A.M.M.E.R. (online?)
* Metroid Prime 3 (most likely online)

And those are just the ones we know about. IGN is constantly hinting at a lot of huge unannounced games coming down the pipe from the big developers. The Wii has now sold half the number of consoles as the 360, and 2-4 times as much as the PS3, depending who you ask, and that's hard for publishers to ignore.

*sigh*

I had a long comment. That I wrote and posted yesterday. Blogger seems to have ate it somehow.

I don't feel like rewriting it now. But my PS3 account name is duskcat, so you can add me to your list. (Not as much fun as saying "lets be wiifriends" ;)
