Gay marriage stays in Canada

The Conservative party here in Canada tried to pass a measure repealling gay marraige in Canada (but leaving unions alone along with all pre-existing marriages). But luckily it was defeated in a free vote.

Quick Canadian politics lesson: what is a free vote? In Parliament, people tend to vote their party lines. In what is called a whipped vote, members of a party are expected to vote how the party believes one should vote or else face disciplinary action (e.g., have campaign funds pulled). A free vote, though, lets people vote how they want without any worry of punishment. Today was a free vote which, by the margin of defeat for this bill, shows strong support for gay marriage in Canada's government.
