Random thoughts

I called my brother today to tell him I would accept his offer to make me a pair of chaps. While I was saying goodbye he said he wanted an "exposition on Canada vs. America", which had stemmed from him asking me what Canadians thought of Americans. I can say that so far, Canadians view Americans much like the rest of the world; self-centered. But the answer to his "vs." question, I just said "Canada is better". =)

When I go down to visit my dad this weekend I am going to completely pay off my AMEX bill. Once that is done I will have some money left in my US bank account for personal use for when I visit the States, but otherwise all of my banking needs have now been moved up to Canada.

I need to go shooting up here. I have no clue where to go or what the laws are in regards to being able to handle a firearm, but I want to go to the shooting range and shoot a rifle to see if I like them more than a shotgun.

I was talking with Meesh today and I was saying that I should start calling her Smarty Pants since she is so bloody smart. But then she countered with the fact that she has "selective retardation" (e.g., reading analog clocks does not come naturally to her; she totally understands how to read them, she just doesn't recognize the time instinctively). So I said her full nickname can be Smarty Pants But With Holes In Her Underwear (SPBWHIHU, or simply SPBHU so it is at least the acronym can be pronounced). And putting this up in my blog was her idea.

Recovering from my illness is still coming along. I am coughing a little bit more, but at least my skull doesn't ache when I do. Still feel a little tired. My right thigh is achy most of the time, but that might be from having slept on it funny or something.

Speaking of disconnecting myself from the States, after my AMEX is dealt with, I will only need to register my car here, get insurance, and probably get a driver's license. Otherwise I am just waiting on my medical insurance to kick in, call the US embassy to find out what I shouldn't do to piss the States off enough to disown me, and to apply for my Canadian passport.

I think I am going to go eat and call some of the people before I go back to studying for my midterm on Thursday that I can't really study for.

The natural intuitive ability to read analog clocks isn't a given. I would hardly call it "selective retardation." "Intelligence" in one area does not necessarily corellate to intelligence in another.
Reading a clock, like any other type of thing, is a learned process that relates to how one thinks about time, or rather, was taught to think about time. To someone growing up in a digital age, it's not uncommon for one to think of time as "11:45" rather than "a quarter to twelve".
Thus, reading an analog clock for such a person is actually an exercise in translation, from essentially one "language" of time to another. Like anyone reading a foreign language and tranlating in their head, this process takes time in which a certain amount of mental juggling and rearranging occurs.
