I just cancelled my Citi card. Originally I had it since it is a Mastercard and some places don't accept AMEX. But I have never loved the card; the web site has never been the best and the amount of solicitation from Citi has been annoying.
Boy do they fight to keep you! They were willing to roll back my late fee (the thing that finally pushed me over the edge to cancel was I missed my June and July payments because I just forgot June, I think, and I never got July's bill to my knowledge; no email notification from Citi). Anyway, I just persevered, being firm without being rude and got them to cancel the card.
The whole "being firm without being rude" is definitely not something that has defined me my entire life. I can easily imagine times earlier in my life when I would have been much more susceptible to their "aww, don't go" tactics and had a much harder time brushing it all off. Definitely not the same person I was back in high school. Hell, I am not the same person I was when I started at Cal.
