Someone asked me the other day what I would spend my money on if I actually had a decent income (as in what would cause me to actually use all that money but still had a budget). Couple things came to mind.
One is clothes. Being as tall as I am with the build I have means most clothes don't fit me very well. It would be great to have the money to buy tailored pants or custom jeans. At the moment I am just lucky to have jeans that fit. Jeans I can deal with, I think, thanks to the Levi's Store in SF. Regular pants, though, are another issue. I can get chinos from Land's End in my size, but I don't love all the colors. What I would rather have are wool pants from Nordstrom, tailored to my size. This also translates over to nice shirts like my Nordstrom and Hugo Boss button-downs that I have. I also need to hit up BR and get more stretch shirts to use as undershirts.
Audio/video equipment is another place I might splurge. I am not thinking of top-of-the-line speakers and such, but a nice HDTV with decent equipment hooked up to it would be cool.
Of course having a fast computer is always good. I doubt I will ever go back to a desktop system, but it would be nice to always have the best Apple laptop at the moment. And if I had the money I would have a server box running in the corner (either OS X, Linux, or OpenBSD).
A car that I fit in and that drove well would be a nice change of pace. I am not imagining anything past a BMW 3 Series in terms of cost.
Having a condo or house in a major city, or at least nearby, would be great. That wouldn't be cheap.
I do love travelling, and that costs. Having enough money to always get to go to PyCon along with some other trip every year would not be cheap.
And finally good food can be expensive. I always enjoy eating out and that is definitely where the bulk of my income is going at the moment.
So I could definitely use up my entire income if I wasn't careful. =) Luckily I don't collect anything expensive (my Japanese woodblock prints can be had for $100) nor have a girlfriend (although that is an expensive I could live with =). I am going to have to be careful with my money (overall, not just from this summer) since I no longer have a safety net like I used to. Time to grow up and start managing my money like I live in the real world. =)
